Association of Risk-Reducing Salpingo-Oophorectomy With Breast Cancer Risk in Women With BRCA1 and..

The authors of this case series evaluated the association between risk-reducing salpingo-oophorectomy (RRSO) and breast cancer risk in 876 families with pathogenic variant BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations. The cumulative risk of breast cancer in women without RRSO was 61% by age 70 years for women with the BRCA1 pathogenic variant versus 12.1% in women who do not carry the pathogenic variant. For BRCA1 carriers who had RRSO at age 30 years, breast cancer risk was 48.2% versus 52.8% for RRSO performed at age 50 years. BRCA2 families had breast cancer risk by age 70 years of 54%, and those without BRCA2 mutations had breast cancer risk of 10.3%. For BRCA2 carriers who had RRSO by age 30 years, this risk was 53.5%; it was 51.7% for those who had RRSO by age 50 years. Notably, age at RRSO did not appear to be associated with cumulative breast cancer risk among BRCA2 pathogenic variant carriers.
